Duke University professors Charlotte Pierce-Baker and her husband Houston A. Baker, Jr. stand inside the Allen Building on the Duke’s west campus on Friday, Feb. 16, 2001. The pair have been married for 36 years and met when they attended Howard University. They have been at Duke since 1999 where Houston is an English professor and Charlotte is an associate research professor of women’s studies. The Bakers both have secondary appointments in African and African American Studies at Duke.
